American Pencil Company 11.5" Figural Pencil Holder (Circa 1915) – Rare Early Writing Instrument Advertising, Original Paint
This circa 1915 figural pencil holder is an exceptional example of early American writing‑related advertising. Measuring 11.5 inches long, this unusual black, green, and silver pressed‑metal pencil case was produced by the American Pencil Company, one of the nation’s earliest and most influential pencil manufacturers. Founded in 1861 by Edward Weissenborn and acquired by the Reckford family in 1885, the company had grown to over 2,000 employees by the time this piece was made.
The holder features a nickel‑silver screw‑off cap, bold period paint, and the company’s shield logo, stamped “American Pencil Co. N.Y. Patent Appl’d For.” Its condition is excellent, showing only the expected minor paint loss and light wear at the tip consistent with age and use. The surface remains vibrant, and the form retains its crisp, early 20th‑century character.
Because few figural pencil cases from this era survive—especially with original paint and markings—this piece stands out as a highly desirable collectible for enthusiasts of antique writing instruments, early American advertising, office antiques, and turn‑of‑the‑century stationery history.
A rare and visually striking artifact from one of America’s foundational pencil manufacturers.
