Bronze Bohemian Woman by Emmanuel Villanis – Late 19th Century

This large brown‑patinated bronze signed E. Villanis represents the celebrated Bohemian Woman, one of Emmanuel Villanis’s most iconic subjects. The figure stands with a lyre in hand, her pose both graceful and liberated, embodying the sensual, expressive style that made Villanis one of the most sought‑after sculptors of the late 19th century. The finely modelled drapery, soft volumes, and delicate facial features highlight the exceptional casting quality associated with Villanis’s works, many of which were produced by the Société des Bronzes de Paris.

The inscription “Bohemian” on the base echoes Villanis’s fascination with idealized, poetic female figures—mysterious, romantic, and full of character. The deep, warm brown patina enhances the sculpture’s tactile richness and the interplay of light across its surfaces, a quality noted in comparable pieces such as the Bohémienne busts documented in late‑19th‑century Art Nouveau collections. Similar bronzes, including those referenced in specialist catalogues and galleries, emphasize the same refined modelling and expressive charm.

Emmanuel Villanis (1858–1914), born in Lille to Italian parents and trained at the Accademia Albertina in Turin, became one of the most prolific creators of female bronzes during the Belle Époque. His works—often inspired by literature, opera, and allegorical themes—remain highly collectible today, with Bohemian Woman ranking among his most recognizable creations.
