Offered here is an exceptional example of the City Bank with Crown, manufactured by the J. & E. Stevens Company of Cromwell, Connecticut and dated Oct. 1st, 1873 on the back plate. This handsome cast‑iron architectural still bank stands approximately 5½" H x 4¼" W x 3⅜" D and represents one of Stevens’ most attractive early building‑form banks.
This particular example features the extremely scarce green building with white trim, widely regarded by collectors as the rarest of the six known color variations. The bank retains an impressive 85% original paint with no touch‑ups, showing a rich, honest surface that is increasingly difficult to find. Its only minor apology is a small chip on one of the side plates, as photographed; otherwise, the bank is in excellent condition with no cracks, repairs, or other issues.
Architectural still banks from the early 1870s rarely survive with such strong original paint, and the green‑and‑white City Bank with Crown almost never appears on the open market. This is a superb opportunity to acquire a highly desirable color variant from America’s most iconic 19th‑century bank manufacturer.
