This Kenton Yellow Kid Donkey Wagon, produced in the early 20th century, is a rare and highly collectible example of one of America’s earliest comic‑character toys. The figure represents Mickey Dugan, better known as The Yellow Kid, the iconic character from Richard Felton Outcault’s groundbreaking 1890s comic strip Hogan’s Alley. Widely regarded as America’s first comic character, the Yellow Kid sparked a massive wave of merchandising that helped establish the comic‑character toy market.
This pressed‑steel donkey wagon measures 8.25 inches long by 4.75 inches high and features a vibrant yellow wagon, silver donkey, and silver wheels, creating a striking four‑color paint scheme typical of early Kenton production. The removable Yellow Kid figure—depicted here in a red gown and styled as an African American child—is original to the toy. A slot in the bottom of the cart allows the figure to be lifted out, which is why many surviving examples are found without it.
This example retains bright original paint, crisp details, and excellent structural integrity. Early Kenton toys with complete figures are increasingly scarce, making this a standout piece for collectors of:
Early American comic‑character toys
Kenton Hardware Company toys
Pressed‑steel wagons and early 20th‑century vehicles
Yellow Kid memorabilia and comic‑strip history
A rare and visually striking survivor from the dawn of American pop‑culture merchandising.
