Lanceray – Les Adieux du Cosaque, Signed Bronze, Late 19th Century

Superb late‑19th‑century bronze with a deep brown patina, depicting a Cossack on horseback embracing a woman in a moving farewell scene. This celebrated model, Les Adieux du Cosaque (“The Cossack’s Farewell”), is one of the most iconic compositions by Evgeny Alexandrovich Lanceray (1848–1886), a master of Russian realist sculpture. The base bears his signature in Cyrillic.

Lanceray—of French ancestry through his grandfather, a Napoleonic officer who settled in Russia—became renowned for his exceptional depictions of horses, riders, and military subjects. His works are admired for their anatomical precision, emotional depth, and dynamic movement. Created around 1878, this model belongs to the artist’s most sought‑after period.

His bronzes were cast by the prestigious Félix Chopin foundry in Saint Petersburg, and later by Susse Frères in Paris, contributing to their international recognition. Today, Lanceray’s sculptures are held in major Russian museums and private collections worldwide, and he exhibited twice in Paris during his lifetime.

This example shows slight patina wear, consistent with age, but remains in very good overall condition.
