Large 19th‑Century Wooden Sculpture of a Woman – 185 cm

A monumental 19th‑century patinated wooden sculpture depicting a woman in a flowing, draped dress, gracefully balancing a vase atop her head. The figure’s elongated proportions, poised stance, and rhythmic drapery evoke the neoclassical revival that flourished across Italy during the 1800s, when sculptors frequently drew inspiration from ancient Roman water‑bearers and allegorical maidens.

The quality of the carving is exceptional, with refined modelling of the face, hands, and drapery folds. The patina is particularly striking, intentionally worked to resemble bronze—a technique used in the 19th century to elevate wooden statuary and harmonize it with more luxurious materials in aristocratic interiors. Comparable Italian works from Florence, Naples, and Northern Italy show similar finishes, often created for grand villas or theatrical décors.

Despite its age, the sculpture remains in good overall condition, with expected signs of time: minor cracks, small chips, and old repairs to fingers. These elements are consistent with large antique wooden figures and do not detract from its imposing decorative presence.
