Lehmann Columbia Dancing Sailor with Original Box (Circa 1920s) – Rare German Tin Windup, Pristine Condition

This circa 1920s Lehmann Columbia Dancing Sailor is one of the most charming and historically rich tin windup toys produced by the famed Ernst Paul Lehmann Company of Brandenburg, Germany. Manufactured from 1904 to 1948, these 7.5" tinplate sailors were issued with different hat ribbons, each advertising a specific naval vessel. This example promotes the U.S. Navy ship Columbia—launched in Philadelphia in 1892 and later deployed in both the Spanish‑American War and World War I—making it one of the most desirable versions for collectors of maritime and military‑related toys.

This toy survives in pristine condition, retaining its original paint and fabric with only minor, typical wear to the clothing and light rubbing around the metal key plate from winding. The wind‑up mechanism functions smoothly, allowing the sailor to perform his classic rhythmic “dance” as intended.

Even more impressively, this example includes its original box, marked “Made in Germany” on the lithographed label—an indication that this was a premium export model intended for the American market. The box remains in excellent condition, with only partial restoration to the edges, as photographed.

High‑grade Lehmann sailors with their original boxes are increasingly scarce, and this Columbia variant is especially sought after for its naval connection, condition, and strong visual appeal. A standout piece for collectors of Lehmann toys, German tin windups, naval memorabilia, and early 20th‑century mechanical toys.
