Lehmann Paddy and the Pig with Original Box (Circa 1905) – Rare Early German Tin Windup Toy, Near‑Mint Condition
This circa 1905 Lehmann “Paddy and the Pig” tin windup toy is one of the most whimsical and beloved creations of the early 20th century. Produced by the famed Ernst Paul Lehmann Company of Brandenburg, Germany, this delightful 6-inch tinplate toy features an Irishman—Paddy—joyfully perched atop a spirited pig, ready for the ride of his life. When wound, Paddy twists and sways as the pig rolls forward, creating one of the most charming and humorous actions in the Lehmann catalog.
This example is an early production version, marked only with the 12 May 1903 patent date on the underside. It survives in spectacular, all‑original near‑mint condition, retaining its untouched paint and crisp lithography. Only minor, age‑appropriate oxidation spots appear on Paddy’s clothing—typical for authentic early Lehmann toys and far lighter than usually encountered.
Even more impressively, this toy comes with its original box, which remains in excellent condition with only minor imperfections. Original boxes for Paddy and the Pig are scarce and significantly enhance both desirability and value.
This particular example comes from the esteemed Abby Schroeder Collection, where it was exhibited in her museum—an important provenance that underscores its quality. After enjoying it in our own collection for several years, we are now offering this exceptional toy to the public market.
A truly top‑tier example for advanced collectors of Lehmann toys, German tin windups, and early 20th‑century mechanical toys, combining rarity, condition, provenance, and charm in one irresistible package.
