Owl Turns Head Mechanical Bank (Brown Variant, c.1888) – J. & E. Stevens

This Owl Turns Head Mechanical Bank (Brown Variant), patented in 1888, is one of the most iconic and widely collected cast‑iron mechanical banks produced by the J. & E. Stevens Company of Cromwell, Connecticut. Designed by James H. Bowen, the model became a bestseller thanks to its charming animation and wide range of color variations, with the brown version being among the most visually appealing.

The bank features a finely cast owl perched on a tree stump. When the lever is pressed, the owl turns its head as the coin drops into the bank—an ingenious bit of late‑19th‑century mechanical design that helped make Stevens the leading manufacturer of mechanical banks.

This example is in excellent all‑original condition, retaining approximately 90% of its original paint with no chips, cracks, touch‑ups, or repairs. Importantly, it still has its original glass eyes, which are often replaced on surviving examples. The mechanism works perfectly, and the bank includes its original coin trap, another feature frequently missing.

Collectors value this bank for its:

  • Highly desirable brown paint variant

  • Original eyes, paint, and coin trap

  • Strong mechanical action and crisp casting

  • Importance within the Stevens mechanical bank lineup

  • Crossover appeal to collectors of Americana and 19th‑century toys

A superb, investment‑grade example of one of the most beloved mechanical banks ever produced.
