Rare James Fallows Double Horse Bell Toy – Circa 1880s

This rare early American tin articulated bell toy, manufactured in the 1880s by James Fallows & Sons of Philadelphia, is an exceptional surviving example from one of the most inventive toy makers of the late 19th century. Measuring 7.75" high x 8.75" long x 4.5" deep, the toy features a charming pair of bright yellow horses mounted on a green tin base, a color palette strongly associated with Fallows’ whimsical designs.

When pulled, the toy springs to life: the bells ring and the horses move in a galloping motion, a delightful mechanical action that would have captivated its original young owner. Fallows was known for producing some of the most imaginative and animated tin toys of the era, and double‑horse bell toys are among the most sought‑after due to their complexity and scarcity.

This example retains completely original paint with no touch‑ups, repairs, or restoration, a remarkable survival given the fragility of early American tin toys. We have located only one other known example, and that piece had restoration—underscoring just how few have endured. Because tin toys were lightweight and heavily played with, most were damaged or discarded, making untouched examples like this extraordinarily rare.

With its vibrant surface, excellent mechanical action, and exceptional originality, this James Fallows double horse bell toy stands as a museum‑quality piece of 19th‑century American toy history and a prize for advanced collectors of early tin toys and Americana.
